John Lee Hooker, above, is one of my all-time favorite heroes from the legions of blues pioneers. In my mind his early original work is the epitome of the authentic monochordal blues style – with that classic bluesy approach of a playing in a major key, and then with vocal melody often sliding into and out of that minor third.
